Making a Difficult Decision
Last week, I received some unexpected bad news. A close family friend was diagnosed with cancer. When I heard the news, my heart sank. To make matters more difficult, this was taking place in Massachusetts while I was over 1200 miles away in my Florida home. My immediate reaction was to fly to Massachusetts so I could be with friends and family.
However, that would not be so easy because I had a full client schedule and several events to attend. After much thought and several discussions, I decided to stay home and to lend my support via phone, email, Facebook and text messaging. I also decided to fly to Massachusetts later on when I could schedule time out of the office. It was a hard decision but I felt it was the right one, at least for the moment.
As business owners, especially for those of us who work alone, there will be times in life when we must make hard decisions. We must juggle personal and business priorities, not having the luxury of taking a vacation or leave time and continuing to receive a paycheck.
During such times, it is helpful to talk through the situation with an objective person who can help you to determine the best course of action, for both you and your business. As a coach, I often step into this role for my clients, in both business and personal situations. I am thankful for those people who helped me to work through this difficult decision.
