Winning the War on Mosquitoes

Thanks to all the responses from Biz Tips readers, I have learned many tips on how to treat mosquito bites as well as how to avoid them all together.  I know this will come in handy during my vacation to New England, especially while exploring the White Mountains of New Hampshire.

Below are some of the tips I received:

To Ward Off Mosquitoes:

Take 100mg of B1 every day. It takes three weeks to soak into your chemistry, but mosquitoes hate the smell and will stay away from you from then on.

Try Off! Familycare Smooth & Dry.  This formula dries on contact with your skin and does not give you that greasy feeling.  It has a low DEET formula, so it does needs to be reapplied more often.

Use mouth wash.  If you’re going to be eating outside, spray the area with Listerine, all the bugs will stay away.

Stay Indoors!

To Stop Itching:

Apply toothpaste to the bite.  Regular old Crest is the best.

Make a paste of water and baking soda.  Put it on the bites and it will take away the itch and dry them out.

Try tea tree oil, the strongest concentration you can find.  You can use this as a repellent also.

Combine baking soda and apple cider vinegar.  Make a paste and slap it on.

Caladryl, the pink stuff.  Also good for poison ivy.

Desperate?  Try rubbing alcohol.

As they say on television, “Please be sure to consult your doctor before trying these remedies!”

  2. Another remedy for itchy mosquito bites: OATMEAL! Make a paste of a small amount of uncooked oatmeal and a little tap water. The paste works best if it’s watery.

Slap some wet oatmeal paste (yeah, I know, sounds yucky) on the itchy bits and voila – itch disappears. At least for a while. You’ll risk little bits of oatmeal drying and falling off your body, but the relief is wonderful.

Expensive alternative: buy oatmeal bath and bathe in the stuff.
