Having a Flashback to Childhood
On Friday afternoons, I like to schedule time outside of the office. I typically do errands and take care of various miscellaneous to-do’s that don’t easily fit into my schedule. I have found that grouping all these activities together helps me to remain focused and productive during the week, and is also a nice way to transition into the weekend.
Last Friday I started my errands at Suntrust Bank where I attend a bi-weekly networking group. I was greeted by the teller who, after processing my transaction, asked me about my vacation in New England. Throughout the afternoon, I had similar experiences, having personal conversations with various local business owners around town.
When returning home, I suddenly had a flashback to my childhood when I used to “run errands” with my father. I remembered being amazed at how he seemed to know everyone in town. When I became a teenager, this amazement turned to annoyance!
As the owner of the local funeral home, my father understood the value and importance of relationships within the community. This was not something he turned on or off, it was a way of life. Pulling into the garage, I suddenly saw my father in a new light. I didn’t realize it at the time, but he was teaching me very valuable lessons in small business success. (Thanks Dad!)
What lessons and values from your childhood can you use to help move your business forward? Give it some thought. You may be surprised what you discover.
