Are you CHALLENGED by the current ECONOMIC REALITY? (Part 2 of 2)

A message from Scott Walkinshaw….

I have just returned from a long weekend at Disneyworld in Orlando Florida where I enjoyed EPCOT’s annual Flower & Garden Festival. There were many beautiful displays and plenty of smiling faces. It was incredible!

Epcot F&G Festival

While I was there, I purposely did not watch television or read the newspaper. Instead, I focused on enjoying the moment and all the magic and fun around me. When was the last time you unplugged and just enjoyed life, even for one hour? I challenge you to do this at least once in the next 7 days and see what magic happens!

“10 Biz Tips for the Current Economic Reality”

(Part 2 of 2)

Whether we like it or not, the business environment has gone through a dramatic change in recent years. As discussed in a prior article, “Are you the LIGHTHOUSE or the STORM?” it is hard to avoid all the doom and gloom messages about the economy that bombard us every day.

In today’s Biz Tips E-Zine, I would like to continue sharing with you some tips that may help you to focus on what YOU CAN DO and the actions YOU CAN TAKE, even during these difficult economic times, to move your business forward.

6. Invest in Training & Education

If you find yourself with free time, use it wisely. Consider what training and education opportunities could help move your business forward and/or set you apart from the competition. Training does not always cost money. There are often many resources for free or low-cost training locally and via the internet.

7. Consider Bartering

Many small business owners are challenged by the current economy, needing services without having the necessary cash flow to pay for them. Explore working with other small business owners on a barter basis, exchanging services as payment rather than cash. (Please be sure to check with your accountant regarding proper accounting and tax consequences.)

8. Evaluate Alternative Income Streams

Sometimes my clients discover they need some immediate cash flow in order to get by, but do not want to take on additional debt. I encourage them to evaluate the alternative income streams which they can tap into during the short-term. This may involve doing contract work, becoming part of a multi-level marketing company or seeking part-time employment. Whatever option(s) you choose, be sure to allocate the necessary time to keep your business in shape and your clients satisfied.

9. Project a Positive Attitude & Outlook

Especially during trying times, people are attracted to business owners and professionals who consistently present a positive attitude and outlook. Be ready to share the actual positive outcomes you have experienced as a result of the current economy.  For example, “Business is really slow” might turn into “I have had an opportunity to explore new ideas and offerings. Let me tell you about some of them.” If you dig deep enough, I am confident you will discover the positives.

10. Don’t Go It Alone

Being a business owner and professional in today’s economic reality can be difficult. Maintaining a positive attitude and continuing to move your business forward can become extremely overwhelming and frustrating. You do not have to bear this burden alone. Seek out the support you need to survive and perhaps even thrive. Working with a business coach is one of the many options for support. Other options for support include professional groups, other business owners, friends, etc.
